Presents VPF's Featured Grower of December, 2024
Jackson, Jackie And Steve Lohr
The Lohr family Endless View Farm has been growing for Pilgrims since 1998. Steve is the main poultry and beef manager, Jackie manages the sheep, and their oldest son, Jackson manages four poultry houses they rent from Valley Pike Farm and runs a litter spreading and hay making business. Their other sons, Thomas and William, help as needed.
The Lohrs won the US Poultry and Egg Environmental Stewardship Award in 2015 and the Massanutten Technical Center (MTC) Honorary Chapter Degree 2024. Their sons have won several FFA events, including National Poultry Proficiency and State Proficiency in sheep, swine, poultry and agri-science.
The family works toward environmental stewardship by implementing BMPs such as cover crops, storm water retention ponds, larger clean-out pads to reduce runoff from spilled litter, and a nutrient management plan. They are also in the process of switching to solar power, which has been a dream since they began farming.
They work toward bird health and welfare by implementing biosecurity practices, including foot baths and separation of "in poultry house" and "outside of poultry house" clothing and footwear, following the guidelines provided by Pilgrim's.
While the Lohrs do a lot of educational work with MTC, FFA and various Environmental and Natural Resources (ENR) projects, Jackie jokes that her greatest pleasure is being able to introduce herself as a "chicken tender!" Choosing to grow poultry has been a great way to raise their family. She says, "the farm is a great place to teach children. When asked 'what do you raise on your farm?' I like to say "We raise chickens, cattle, sheep but mostly kids."
