Shafer Family
For 11 years, Walt and Jan Shafer of Willow Oak Farm have been raising chickens for Pilgrim's. All of the Shafer family were involved at the start. As they grew, they hired Chris and Holly as full-time farm managers.
To be good land stewards and neighbors, they moved the driveway away from their property lines and planted trees as barriers for noise and dust. They have two litter holding sheds with composters to handle their nutrient management program, and they installed solar panels on the chicken houses to offset energy costs.
Jan says, "Walt has been in poultry all his life, working with growers. Starting this poultry operation, he learned what growers experience which allowed him to help growers in other areas." She said their greatest pleasure in being a poultry supplier is having an operation that looks good on the outside, performs well on the inside and provides a quality product.
